Composite Footbridge
All steelwork for this cycle and footbridge was completely assembled prior to lifting it into position on the concrete footings.
Deck concrete was poured in-situ on Bondek structural decking laid between pressed galvanized steel edge forms. Brackets welded to the girders fulfilled the dual functions of supporting the sheetmetal formwork and guardrail posts. This enabled the guard railing to be attached prior to pouring the concrete, avoiding the need for temporary safety fencing.
Shear connectors welded to the top flanges ensured composite action between concrete deck and steel girders.
At 19 metres one piece girders would have been too long for the galvanizing bath. This was solved by adopting the central bolted joint. As well as enabling galvanizing this also facilitated transport and powder coating.
